CSSP Student Council campaigns for security awareness to ensure students’ safety in campus

The College of Social Sciences and Philosophy Student Council (CSSP SC) has initiated their first security campaign to help prevent the rampant petty crimes in the college.
The CSSP SC had its very first security awareness campaign and workshop entitled SAWeek, which stands for Security Awareness Week, headed by CSSP Student Council member Trixie Peralta. It is a week-long campaign dedicated to inform CSSP students on the crimes happening around the college and on how to take preventive measures and to defend themselves when faced with these crimes
CSSP Student Council Vice Chairperson Veronica Manalo said “The CSSP Student Council, together with the administration campaigns for the students’ awareness on these matters,” when asked on the move their council does in action to the crimes.
CSSP Vice Chairperson Veronica Manalo explains how the security awareness campaign of her college was executed. She gave examples on the application of the campaign in real life situations.
One known and recent case of robbery in CSSP happened last year to Professor Perlita Frago-Marasigan. She was attacked in the AS parking lot and was forced into her car, fastened, and driven around the campus until the attackers were done robbing her.
Manalo explained that the entry of people and vehicles cannot be regulated very well; the only thing the administration could do is to have preventive measures and to tighten security, and to raise the awareness of the students about these issues.
“UP is an open university, that is why anyone can enter here,” Manalo added.
She mentioned that it is also the students’ responsibility to report on these crimes for the administration to make an action. “Students do not often report to us or even to the guards if anything gets stolen from them. They just ignore it,” said Manalo in Filipino.
For Manalo, these petty crimes happening not just in her college but in the whole university as well are just symptoms of a bigger problem in the society.###
